The second fashion month of the year is drawing to a close this week in Paris, and for the first time in I don’t know how long I’ve been mostly, well, meh about the whole endeavour. It usually takes me until the end to really go over the shows and see what’s coming for the following season (so make sure to read that post next week!) but while the month is in progress I like to take regular goos at all the street style on parade, and zero in on the little mini-trends that tend to pop up.
This year I just haven’t been inspired. I can’t quite put my finger on why not, but maybe it’s because the street style influencers are trying that bit too hard and it’s showing, with their huge flouncy sleeved dresses and chunky boots, and the editors and special celebrity guests are largely keeping it real low key, in response. Perhaps it’s simply that I’ve become a cranky old fuss-pot, who knows?! It just all seems a bit too-much or slightly boring, but because we’re about to enter cozy clothes season I may as well zero in on one trend that can at least be interpreted at your will – turtle necks.
NYFW September 2019
Layering your turtle or polo neck underneath a summer dress is admittedly a great way to get mileage out of it; wear a big chunky polo on its own before the chill really sets in but once it does, get it under a well-tailored trench.
London Fashion Week September 2019
See those leather-look pants worn with the polo in the second pic? Mark my words, they will be everywhere this AW19 (I’ve already seen a few in New Look and Topshop). I’m currently daring myself to buy a pair. Flouncy sleeves certainly are de rigour, might as well give them a go, and a neck-to-toe monochrome look can look really rather chic.
Milan Fashion Week September 2019
The nice green jumper in the third pic is a bit of a reach, but it’s high necked and comfy looking so let’s just let me have it please, k? Keeping tones neutral and complimentary ups the polished factor, and high-necked, casual dresses seem to be on the up.
Paris Fashion Week September 2019
The wearing of turtle necks needn’t be fusty, they can definitely be funked up with a combat boot and some tartan (a big pattern trend for this season, but when isn’t it, in autumn?). Keeping it minimalist is also an option, brill for those rolling out of bed days but when you need to look a bit put-together. Julianne Moore’s frock isn’t technically a turtleneck, but it’s its very close cousin.
