The Great Eight

Post by CM

This week The Hollywood Reporter published its 5th anniversary edition since changing from a daily newspaper to a weekly magazine, by heralding its Hollywood actress ‘Great Eight’.

Hollywood
L-R, Top: Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Lawernce, Charlotte Rampling. L-R, Bottom: Brie Larson, Jane Fonda, Kate Winslet, Carey Mulligan.

Each actress is notable for their strong personalities and personal style. Shall we take a gander at a favourite look for each one? We shall!

Cate Blanchett

Cate is well known for her directional style, and I really loved her in this Givenchy number at the AACTA Awards in Sydney back in January 2014.

Helen Mirren

I absolutely love this recent outfit worn by Helen Mirren. She looks fresh and relaxed in her Dolce and Gabbana dress, and while I would have swapped the bag for something less boxy, overall the ensemble is perfection.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer has been hitting the ball right out of the park on her Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II media trail. This Ralph Lauren Collection gown is just amazing on her, and I highly approve of her new hair!

Charlotte Rampling

Charlotte

As great as Charlotte looks today; I caught her Oscar-buzzed film 45 Years at the Galway Film Fleadh this summer and found myself envying her poise and still great figure, and check her out in this recent campaign for Nars here, but I couldn’t resist sharing this image of her back in the 60s, with the best pair of glasses ever, and nonchalant polo. A look I’ll be emulating this winter for sure.

Brie Larson

Brie is facing the public eye more and more thanks to her star turn in Lenny Abrahamson’s Room, so she’s been honing her style in accordance with the red carpet turns she’s sure to be taking during awards season next year. I love her in this peach dress, the dark lip is unexpected and cool.

Jane Fonda

Let’s face it, there are few septuagenarians who would feel comfortable and look as good as Jane does in this Valentino gown. She is just so cool, and brilliant in Grace and Frankie alongside Nine to Five co-star Lily Tomlin!

Kate Winslet

Kate usually keeps her style classic, which is why my favourite look comes from the 2002 Academy Awards! She really looked sensational in this Ben de Lisi dress, and keeping everything else simple made sure her beauty shines through.

Carey Mulligan

Maybe a slightly controversial choice, but I love how Carey wore this Erdem look last November. It’s clashing, it’s got a weird mumsy pattern, but she makes it work with her cheeky smirk and cute fringe.

The cover has faced some criticism for not featuring any women of colour (which executive editor Stephen Galloway endeavours to explain here), which is of course an issue that will hopefully be remedied at the quickest pace possible. Do you have any opinions on who else should have made the list? Let us know!
